Nuggget Finder Sadie coil - 1st impressions (2 replies)

After I finished evaluating all of the great information put together by Karelain in his recent round of coil testing, and based on the test results I decided to purchase a NF Sadie coil and give it a tryout.

I received the coil and was immediately impressed with the build quality, including a couple small things that show attention to detail were a rubberized binding ring that covers/seals the seam where the coil cover mounts to help keep debris from getting between the coil and the cover, and a plastic protector enclosing the cable connector to keep dirt etc. out of the pins until it reaches its owner. Like I said small things, but to me indicate a bit more effort was put into the build.

The grey color is great, but as I expected the mounting ears are a bit wide for the std. Whites shaft mount and so I just added a small rubber washer and it tightened up just fine. Importantly to me, the cable was plenty long to comfortably run the PRO in its chest mount configuration. If you run with chest mode, beware that there are some manufacturers who produce coils with short cables that make the PRO less user friendly in the chest mount config.

I haven't had much time for a shakedown cruise yet, but I did get it out to a local park for a short run yesterday. (I bought the coil for nugget hunting, but wanted to see how it ran). The coil ran max gain (TDI PRO) and was quiet and stable. I didn't find much and so after about an hour, I switched back to my 12" dual field and ran over the same ground. Guess what, didn't find much with that either, so it would appear that the old saying of you have to get it under the coil probably holds true for this run.....Pinpointing was pretty solid, I think more time on my part will make pinpointing a non-issue

My initial impressions are quite positive and I anticipate that it will find the goods once I get it out and run it more.

I found most of these relics with my TDI. I had Reg Sniff mod it a couple years ago. I found these in well hunted spots. I use a OZ 12" coil. Pulse delay at 10 & sensitivity as high as I can get with out false signals.

My wet sand , ankle deep setup (no replies)

Just finished my wet sand ankle deep setup. I'm borderline obsessive when it comes to weight due to hip and shoulder problems. I'm satisfied with the weight strength ratio.

This is likely the lightest easiest to swing setup I've seen before.... also doubles as my df shaft. Balance focal point allows the shaft to just glide over the sand with barely any effort. Could actually use just 1 finger.

My shoulder and hip will be thanking me soon.

Had the Bigfoot coil made with extra cable length and foam filled. Perfect for wet sand.

Thanks for looking and HH

Testing battery voltage comparisons (no replies)

I had some requests for testing to see if the higher battery voltage of the 4-cell L-ion added much depth to the TDI SL. To do the tests I placed the coil on a flat surface with the rod vertical. I taped a marked stick to the rod. For a target, I used a 1984 nickel. To do the test, I moved the nickel vertically toward the coil (nickel held flat, parallel to coil) GB off, freq center, gain max. White's 12" DF coil, 18" above ground surface.
16.8v L-ion 12.6v L-ion 10.7v nicad
16.5" 14.5" 13.75"
1 grain gold bar, same test, same settings.
2.0" 2.0" 2.0"

Nickel test GB on, but set at 0.
17" 15" 14"
1 grain gold bar GB on, but set at 0
3.0" 2.5" 2.25"
Raising the GB to max added about 1/2" to all figures, bar and nickel

Ground balance back to "off". Sweeping the nickel from side to side, finding the correct sweep speed by target volume....best depth at slow speed sweep.
14" 12.25" 11.25"

I didn't bother with the sweep test with the gold bar.

Results:
It's obvious the battery voltage has a direct impact on both depth, and sensitivity to small nuggets. All the test methods were suggested by Reg Sniff, other than the testing of the GB on and off comparisons. One thing I learned from the testing was in finding a weak signal, moving the coil up and down may enhance the target signal, if the target is metal.
Assuming his health issues don't prevent it, Reg is going to do some experimentation on the SL to try and figure out why sweeping the nickel losses so much depth compared to moving the nickel vertically toward the coil. If we're fortunate, Reg will also test his ideas on improving the range of sweep speeds that work well. right now, for max sensitivity, the best sweep speed is slow.
Hat's off to John, down under (Auminsweeper) for his suggestion in a PM to me that the SL is the most sensitive with GB "on", which is contrary to most detectors. Turn that GB on, even if you set it at zero, for max sensitivity. if you can run it full on, better yet!

Recently bought these as a back up. 1.5v and fit in the battery holder. Is the positive or negative end the wrong shape? Perplexed by this.

1.5 x 8 so well within the limits

This project has come out really well. The case is a Pelican 1170 (for handguns). There's lots of room, and with the original plastic pot spindles swapped out for brass there's no heat build up or condensation. As the picture shows the board is shielded top, bottom and sides. I've actually used a bigger heavier PI before (Aquastar) so this one is not that hard to get used to. In fresh water the performance is great especially in black sand. Can't wait to see what it will do in salt.
I'm also very happy with the controls config custom for me--a leftie: front 2 X GB + Cond. sw, Top: ON/OFF/ Gain, Delay, T/H, FQ, bottom VOL. Probably add a shoulder strap in due course.

Running this detector in the water is proving to be a tough study--but pretty effective. In that my site has a ton of pins--these can be heard,--the key is to listen for roundness versus any carry-over / double sound. The caps also sound pretty distinctive--kind of drawn out and owing to the steel--kind of not stationary on the cross sweep--just weak. Using the no GB / All Metal setting has a lot of low conductor punch and and staying off the flyspecks is not easy. It's important to listen for solid responses--in all directions. I actually sold a TDI a few years back because it just took me from one micro-conductor to the next but this time I'm more determined to get the hang of this detector in the water. I'd also been trying to run the Gain pretty high--3:00 o'clock +. One or two is fine and still very deep. Backing off the Delay a bit weakens the pin signals too but running at 10 uSc is a good way to learn them. Two 10k bands 3.4 & 5.1 gr.--first blood. Basically--it's taking every bit of PI experience I've got to manage the power of this machine. Ton of potential though. The quarter is from a land hunt.

Anyone have any insights? I have that orange battery holder from the Ukraine, couple rnb batteries,,,, but want to try out 1 of the 16v. Redman won't mail international. Anyone try building 1 with photos? Say 10 aa batteries (mod battery door and tray) or stronger v batteries. Hands are pretty tied where I am so can't really experiment

Added probe to TDI, (no replies)

Was determined to add an inline probe to the TDI, Thanks to Reg it happened.

I know TDI inline probes are scarce, Reg had an extra one and shared the connector pin connections along with other important information. Yesterday, Solderer a second connector with a toggle switch between the two connectors.

At the time, Didn't know other Eric Foster probes worked with the TDI. Already having a GoldQuest probe this morning soldered on a connector and sure enough it works with the TDI. It's the longer stick type, the probe Reg passed to me is much smaller lighter yet defects as deep as the yellow longer probe.

TDI is currently one of my gold jewelry detectors for schools and parks, it does well with low conductive target's ratio of iron or hair pins is very low. What fools me are hair pins and thin wire, overall very good and fun to use. Below is a pic of recent cheap costume jewelry finds, and one 14k ring. The Mojave found the 14k, recently added a GB pot and second discrimination disc pot for checking gold jewelry with the Mojave. Normally use the TDI, But on this particular day was testing the added discrimination check pot to the Mojave and surprisingly piece of gold surfaces.

This TDI is not a Pro model it is a regular model with all of Reg's mods, now with inline probe. Thanks for looking and thanks Reg for the probe and help.

Looking at adding a large square coil for my TDI Pro  (1 reply)

Have located a square framed coil for the TDI Pro,have just made the frame up and this cost peanuts as its made from 3/4'' waste pipe and the coil wire is attached by using velcro.

The actual dimensions are 2mtrx2mtr or about 6+ftx6+ft so its pretty big when its put together, but by using dry joins rather than glued ones so that it can be taken apart for transportation.

Standart type coil 2x2m. Can use it of any PI detectors.
Coil data:
Resistance-3om.
Inductance-It depends on the form which is used.
For 2x2m. about 550-600uh

Pretty certain that the coil will work almost straight out the box,of course it wont detect small items as its main targets will be hoards and massive deep artifacts, only problem that i may come across is location of the control box that would normally be either chest mounted or hip mounted but of course as one would normally suspend these types of coils from 2 straps from either should, what i am thinking is that the coil could well pick the control box up as well.

So if i do have problems of control box pickup will be to have a 2nd person carry the control box outside of the coil, the made up coil should take 2-3 weeks to arrive,so will update on the results, should give me some additional depth over the stock 12'' DF coil

TDI Pro - External Battery Pack (2 replies)

Got creative recently and made an external battery pack for my TDI Pro - mostly because the stock battery was no longer available when I purchased my machine (no spare battery), and the stock battery it came with doesn't last very long in the field (about 4 hours of good power). The stock battery is 14.4 volts / 4.8 amp hours.

The new battery pack consists of 12 rechargeable "C-cell" NiMH batteries, wired in series (1.2 volts each x 12 batteries = 14.4 volts) held together using two 6 "C-cell" battery holders wired together "+" to "-". Fresh off the charger the voltage measured a safe 15.69 volts (less that the 18.5 volt maximum for the TDI Pro). Each battery is rated at 5000 mAh (5 amp hours = 1 amp draw for 5 hours), and when all 12 are connected in series it has 60,000 mAh (60 amp hours = 1 amp draw for 60 hours).

The TDI Pro draws 0.6 amp, so from a full charge to zero power = 100 hours (60 divided by 0.6). Naturally, battery capacity ratings are typically overstated so actual performance is less.

The bottom line is that this battery has a LOT of stored power, and I can to hunt for several days without having to worry about a low battery. No need to carry a spare battery either. Recharging is pretty fast - I recharge all 12 batteries at once in 3 EBL chargers - it takes about 3 hours.

The new external plug-in does not defeat the original design, so you can still use the stock battery inside the box by itself if you want. The cost to assemble everything was reasonable (12 batteries, 3 chargers, 1 pouch, 1 web belt, 2 battery holders, and assorted wiring) worked out to be less than the price of a new stock battery.

Pros: Long battery life (14.4 volts / 60 amp hours)
Lighter metal detector (stock battery removed)
Fast recharge time

Cons: Batteries must be removed from holder for re-charging
Battery pack is carried on your waist with a web belt

TDI as a Beach Machine (no replies)

On a freshwater black sand beach, there's no way you could run say, a GQA2 at its fastest delay--down near 10 uSc. I'm learning that the TDI is no different and although this is its deepest setting the tradeoff is instability and reduced depth. When you bring it up to about 14 or 15 uSc (10:00 o'clock) the warble settles down a lot. This lets you use more gain. I realized that the in air performance was just that--at high Gain or 10 uSc. With the GQ this is more obvious--sounds like hell. With the TDI though it doesn't sound that bad with slightly lowered Gain, but the "one-way" responses are an indicator that the signal is not penetrating--there's a lag--almost like when you run a PI with mismatched phones. I'm not even using the GB--still a lot to learn.
