Which TDI to buy? (1 reply)

So im looking to add a PI machine back into my arsenal. Had an Infinium a few years back which I really liked, but I wanted to possibly try out a TDI this time around. My old hunting buddy had an SL and it frustrated him to no end. My infinium was easy to use and i found some great relics. I was wondering which model of the TDI i should look out for? Older big box or the pro or sl? Im primarily using it for land relic hunting only. Thanks for any advice.

TDI and TDI Pro (2 replies)

Some people think there is some magical difference between the TDI and the Pro, but there isn't . The truth is, both use the same motherboard and only differ by these three things. First, the Pro has a vernier GB control which is done by simply inserting another pot in one of the GB pot wires. Next, the internal volume control on the TDI is removed and a new pot is soldered to the motherboard in place of the removed volume pot used on the regular TDI. Finally, here is the real important difference and that is two capacitors are changed to different values.

The TDI has .22uf caps and the Pro has .10uf caps on the differential integrator stages. Now here is the beauty, change these two caps on the TDI and you have a "poor man's" TDI Pro. The vernier GB pot isn't needed here in the US nor is the volume control.

Owners who had The mods done to reduce the noise and had the "Pro" capacitor change mod already have this capacitor change and already do have an improved poor man's Pro. I say improved because they have the noise reduction mod that is already in the SL.

Actually, the TDI noise reduction mod it is an improved version of the SL mod that makes the SL threshold so quiet. Actually, SL's made from 2015 and later have the improved version also. In late 2014 a strange "hiccup" noise was causing serious concerns in Australia on a version of the SL called the SPP (Sierra Pulse Pro). With help of Alan Holcomb (then retiring CEO of Whites providing equipment and the assistance of Luke Lindsay who lives in Australia, we managed to solve the hiccup problem. This simple mod now installed in SL motherboards since late 2014 makes the later produced SL much easier to ground balance without hurting the noise reduction. (Earlier SL's could benefit from these "hiccup" mods also).

I mention this because there is a guy who just may be doing the TDI and SL mods in the future. I will mention more when the time is right. Hopefully, that will be soon.

Anyone know if the SL version for 2016,2017 is mounted on a different shaft than the standard S shaft ? Almost looks like the Pro version shaft.
1 of my competitors just bought 1 and it's not an S shaft

I'm new to the TDI SL AND NEED SOME HELP. I'm in Virginia doing a civil war relic hunt and found a button and a pistol ball with my AT Pro. I dug an 8" deep hole and put the eagle button in the bottom and swung the TDI SL over the hole to hear what a good signal sounds like. It sounded great. Next I removed the button and dropped the pistol ball into the hole and swung over the hole. THE TDI SL did NOT pick it up.
WHY?
How do I set it up to hear a lead bullet?
Here are my settings
Gain - 6
Pulse delay - 10
GEB - on
Threshold - 12 o'clock
Frequency - 12 o'clock
Conductivity - All

Been scoring several deep coins from two old parks these recent weeks, a good friend and I are getting masked coins with our Pi's.

Switched to using my two smallest coils with the TDI, 6" x10" folded and 8" x12" folded. What I'm finding is the TDI can get masked coins between the trash with smaller coils, today dug 8 coins between 6.5" to 7.5" inches deep with the 6" x10" mono. 7 wheat's and a Mercury dime, our Explorers and upper end VLF can't touch these type of masked signals.

These are not deep finds by any means, but due to masking they are beyond reach from our top end detectors. What's exciting is, Now we can go back to our old pounded parks and get these masked signals with our Pi's.

Recently upgraded to one of Reid's battery packs, and with the help of Reg coaching me with a minor change to my TDI for increased gain. Between the higher voltage battery and increased gain, Added about an inch depth to each of my TDI coils.

TDI is a great park machine, plant your feet on old park soil and the TDI will not let you down. Remarkable, And that's an understatement for this fun pi.

Pictured are today's finds on the 6" x 10" mono, and recent finds the past several weeks. Plus, Take a look at the Periscope probe thin rod in the ground, after locating the coin took a quick pic. It measured 7.25" inches in depth and the coin was actually the silver dime, was using the side of a Whites pin pointer as a ruler to measure depth. My deepest park coin is a measured 10.5" inches, had a few at this depth but the bulk of them are between 6" to 9" inches.

Thanks for looking, and thanks Reg for the mod coaching. Appreciate the help!

Added some depth to the TDI (20 replies)

Recently, Reg suggested I make change to my TDI. This is information he has posted before, with his permission I'm going to share my experience's with adding this mod.

My TDI has the preamp mod with the better IC, What this did was improve stability it's very smooth. Thus, Allowing more gain in area's with EMI or areas one may have issues with noise.

One of the other mod is shorting out a capacitor, This eliminates a third filter. Reg explained what I needed to do, followed his instructions and completed the mod. With this particular mod, Greatly adds depth and now the faint one way signals are a two way signal. Earlier, I was generous and mentioned it added an inch in depth. But it actually adds more under right conditions, was amazed seeing the extra depth.

Later, Added a switch so I can use the mod with either on or off position. Didn't have too, But I like knowing can always switch back to stock performance with the flip of a toggle switch or to boost mode when ground conditions allow. Without the switch, the user will need to reduce gain if they want too hunt in areas to reduce noise. This added switch with the lead's hasn't shown an issue, and it may but so far I'm not seeing any problems.

Shorting this particular capacitor was one of the mods Reg and his friend Paul were doing, Reg has this information out there on the Internet if you want to Google it.

Also, Recently purchased one of Reid man's battery's. Wow, well made and it auctally added some depth. However, The mod I'm sharing above greatly increases depth and strengthens those weak signals. From both air testing and from my test bed, anywhere from 1 to 2 inches depending on the size coil.

With Reg's permission, here are a couple of pictures with the shorted capacitor mod eliminating the third filter. I've added a switch with the leads soldered to the cap, Secured with heat sink tubing to secure the soldered wires with the capacitor so it doesn't wiggle loose out in the field.

I know Reg has mentioned this before, and I agree please don't do these mods unless you are comfortable with these things.

Thanks to Reg, the old TDI can be a TDI Pro.

All the best,
Paul

Recent discovery of the conductivity switch on my White's TDI SL.
The video shows what I've found.
It also works the same with the 7 1/2" dual field coil.
Just the opposite happens if you run the machine with the conductivity switch to high, low conductors are also heard.

More information to follow......

Quick TDI relic hunt (12 replies)

We have a old 1850 settlement near my area, farmer allows a friend and I access to search here anytime. About all that's left is old lead, tons of iron and once in a while an old button or old coin surfaces.

My main relic detector here is the GPX, yesterday tried the TDI which is my first time using a TDI for relic hunting. Up until yesterday, I've only used a TDI for park or gold jewelry hunting.

Wow! Wasn't expecting much difference between TDI park and relic hunting, thought I would gracefully adapt and pull finds up by the handful conductive finds that is. In stead, iron surfaced with ease sounding like good conductive signals.

Was tempted to switch to the GPX, I know it's capabilities what it can and can not do. But, Struck with the TDI managed to get a few pieces of old lead after switching to a smaller coil. Until I get used to using the TDI as a relic matching, will use smaller coils before moving up to the larger ones.

Was different, dug a higher ratio of iron with the TDI. Maybe it was me, not really accustomed to the TDI as a relic detector but put me and the TDI in an old park we always manage to get an old coin or two.

Hand's down the TDI in a park is clearly better than the GPX, but relic hunting think that's were the GPX has an edge and that's due to discrimination. Over all, I'm not giving up with the TDI going to master it in relic hunting.

Before I forget, With recent post with the SL using the Pro handle. I've never tried an SL with an S-handle, so temporary mounted my TDI on a Mars shaft to see how it swings. My GPX is mounted on one and it auctally swings well, fold's down for storage or hiking in long distances. I've found this shaft is great for these purposes, can fit inside a backpack as well.

Until the next TDI relic hunt, these are my first TDI relic finds. Iron is ok, especially from old settlements but it's nice to sometimes pass iron up to increase ones odds for a button or old coin.

Nuggget Finder Sadie coil - 1st impressions (8 replies)

After I finished evaluating all of the great information put together by Karelain in his recent round of coil testing, and based on the test results I decided to purchase a NF Sadie coil and give it a tryout.

I received the coil and was immediately impressed with the build quality, including a couple small things that show attention to detail were a rubberized binding ring that covers/seals the seam where the coil cover mounts to help keep debris from getting between the coil and the cover, and a plastic protector enclosing the cable connector to keep dirt etc. out of the pins until it reaches its owner. Like I said small things, but to me indicate a bit more effort was put into the build.

The grey color is great, but as I expected the mounting ears are a bit wide for the std. Whites shaft mount and so I just added a small rubber washer and it tightened up just fine. Importantly to me, the cable was plenty long to comfortably run the PRO in its chest mount configuration. If you run with chest mode, beware that there are some manufacturers who produce coils with short cables that make the PRO less user friendly in the chest mount config.

I haven't had much time for a shakedown cruise yet, but I did get it out to a local park for a short run yesterday. (I bought the coil for nugget hunting, but wanted to see how it ran). The coil ran max gain (TDI PRO) and was quiet and stable. I didn't find much and so after about an hour, I switched back to my 12" dual field and ran over the same ground. Guess what, didn't find much with that either, so it would appear that the old saying of you have to get it under the coil probably holds true for this run.....Pinpointing was pretty solid, I think more time on my part will make pinpointing a non-issue

My initial impressions are quite positive and I anticipate that it will find the goods once I get it out and run it more.

Just finished my wet sand ankle deep setup. I'm borderline obsessive when it comes to weight due to hip and shoulder problems. I'm satisfied with the weight strength ratio.

This is likely the lightest easiest to swing setup I've seen before.... also doubles as my df shaft. Balance focal point allows the shaft to just glide over the sand with barely any effort. Could actually use just 1 finger.

My shoulder and hip will be thanking me soon.

Had the Bigfoot coil made with extra cable length and foam filled. Perfect for wet sand.

Thanks for looking and HH

Testing battery voltage comparisons (16 replies)

I had some requests for testing to see if the higher battery voltage of the 4-cell L-ion added much depth to the TDI SL. To do the tests I placed the coil on a flat surface with the rod vertical. I taped a marked stick to the rod. For a target, I used a 1984 nickel. To do the test, I moved the nickel vertically toward the coil (nickel held flat, parallel to coil) GB off, freq center, gain max. White's 12" DF coil, 18" above ground surface.
16.8v L-ion 12.6v L-ion 10.7v nicad
16.5" 14.5" 13.75"
1 grain gold bar, same test, same settings.
2.0" 2.0" 2.0"

Nickel test GB on, but set at 0.
17" 15" 14"
1 grain gold bar GB on, but set at 0
3.0" 2.5" 2.25"
Raising the GB to max added about 1/2" to all figures, bar and nickel

Ground balance back to "off". Sweeping the nickel from side to side, finding the correct sweep speed by target volume....best depth at slow speed sweep.
14" 12.25" 11.25"

I didn't bother with the sweep test with the gold bar.

Results:
It's obvious the battery voltage has a direct impact on both depth, and sensitivity to small nuggets. All the test methods were suggested by Reg Sniff, other than the testing of the GB on and off comparisons. One thing I learned from the testing was in finding a weak signal, moving the coil up and down may enhance the target signal, if the target is metal.
Assuming his health issues don't prevent it, Reg is going to do some experimentation on the SL to try and figure out why sweeping the nickel losses so much depth compared to moving the nickel vertically toward the coil. If we're fortunate, Reg will also test his ideas on improving the range of sweep speeds that work well. right now, for max sensitivity, the best sweep speed is slow.
Hat's off to John, down under (Auminsweeper) for his suggestion in a PM to me that the SL is the most sensitive with GB "on", which is contrary to most detectors. Turn that GB on, even if you set it at zero, for max sensitivity. if you can run it full on, better yet!

This project has come out really well. The case is a Pelican 1170 (for handguns). There's lots of room, and with the original plastic pot spindles swapped out for brass there's no heat build up or condensation. As the picture shows the board is shielded top, bottom and sides. I've actually used a bigger heavier PI before (Aquastar) so this one is not that hard to get used to. In fresh water the performance is great especially in black sand. Can't wait to see what it will do in salt.
I'm also very happy with the controls config custom for me--a leftie: front 2 X GB + Cond. sw, Top: ON/OFF/ Gain, Delay, T/H, FQ, bottom VOL. Probably add a shoulder strap in due course.

Running this detector in the water is proving to be a tough study--but pretty effective. In that my site has a ton of pins--these can be heard,--the key is to listen for roundness versus any carry-over / double sound. The caps also sound pretty distinctive--kind of drawn out and owing to the steel--kind of not stationary on the cross sweep--just weak. Using the no GB / All Metal setting has a lot of low conductor punch and and staying off the flyspecks is not easy. It's important to listen for solid responses--in all directions. I actually sold a TDI a few years back because it just took me from one micro-conductor to the next but this time I'm more determined to get the hang of this detector in the water. I'd also been trying to run the Gain pretty high--3:00 o'clock +. One or two is fine and still very deep. Backing off the Delay a bit weakens the pin signals too but running at 10 uSc is a good way to learn them. Two 10k bands 3.4 & 5.1 gr.--first blood. Basically--it's taking every bit of PI experience I've got to manage the power of this machine. Ton of potential though. The quarter is from a land hunt.
