Coin Shooting Discrimination Question For Coins (6 replies)

Hello,
This is my first time posting to the form as usually I can find an answer online. I have the original Whites TDI Metal Detector and I am going after silver coins and have found several silver dimes, and quarters so far in an area that I am searching. I know there is a lot more there as I have seen quite a few silver half dollars and silver dollars most dating from the 1800's to about 1924 found by eye. My problem is the lot I am searching is covered in nails, bottle caps, and small pieces of iron. I was following Steve Herschbach instructions that I found online to discriminate against nails and bottle caps.
It states With the unit powered off, set the TDI Gain at 12, Pulse Delay at 10uS, Ground Balance knob at 1.5, GEB switch On, Target Conductivity On, and then turn the unit Power On. Set for a faint Threshold. If you are getting any interference (uneven threshold, warbles, and funny noises) slowly run the Frequency knob through its range seeking the quietest setting. Then flip the Target Conductivity switch to High. The threshold should go extremely smooth. If you get spikes or noises breaking through the normally rock solid threshold you may need to reduce the Gain. But usually at this point the threshold will be so smooth and solid you will find you can reduce it so low as to be barely heard.

I have followed these steps and now the detector discriminates against nails and bottle caps with no signal heard when running them a few inches off the coil. I run a silver quarter or dime across the coil and get a signal. I run newer half dollars, dimes and quarters I still get a good signal. My problem is every time I run Silver Dollars dating from the late 1800's to early 1900's I get no signal at all. I do not have any silver 50 cent pieces to test with, so I am unsure how it would respond with those. I can not afford to lose silver dollars or possibly silver half dollars. Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. I have owned this metal detector for about 6 months now so I am still a newbie.

Hi Guys,

I 'm using the TDI PRO and i need to have/make the 18v 5 Cells battery pack, but it seems impossible for me to buy one in France.

Could you explain me which protection board, battery or other components i have to buy to make this pack ?

I do not have great skills in electronics, but I can do some things.
If you know a tutorial that'll be really nice if you could send the link to me.

Regards.

Original TDI at the beach (2 replies)

I got my hands on a used TDI this week and took it to the beach today. Wow! First target was a nickle in the damp sand at 14". Second target was a dime at the same depth. Third target was a two cent euro (!) at about a foot. Fourth target was a small bullet weight at 10". Fifth target was at the surf line so depth was impossible to measure but it was a small junk ring that had been plated at one time but was now just copper colored. Then the detector went crazy. Took afew minutes to find the hairline crack in the coil near the ears. Water got into the coil and that was it for the day for the TDI. Bummer. Fortunately, I had a backup detector with me so all was not lost but the backup did not hold a candle to the TDI.

I don't know the history of this detector but I suspect it has had Reg's modification done to it as it is quiet even at a gain of 12. It is an original Pulse Scan TDI. I hunted with ground balance off, pulse delay 10us, gain at 12, threshold at a low hum. Figured I would see how much trash I dug before I switched over to GEB on.

Anyway, preliminary results are very encouraging. Can't wait to get things straight and try it again. Going to take it to the park soon and try to get the old coins I know are there but are out of reach of my VLF detectors. Happy hunting!

Jim your email is full so I am posting your answer here.

Jim asked this question.

Hello Reg, I am considering buying a White's Tdi and was thinking of getting an SL. I was just wondering if the SL could perform as good as a modded pro. Also, would the aftermarket Reidman battery for the SL help it get deeper and will it still be stable? Could it damage the SL?.......
Hi Jim,

The TDI and the SL have close to the same depth but the TDI wins because of the battery voltage. Use a 4 cell reidman battery in the SL and the depth is much closer, probably the same. The higher voltage shouldn't make much difference to stability. It also shouldn't hurt the SL The modded Pro will still have a little advantage because of the filtering which allows the Pro to be swept faster, so the sweep speed is key then. Ideally, the SL should have a filter change to be improved, but there is no one doing that now. So, sweep speed becomes more critical and can easily make a difference. Find the right sweep speed and that is the key.

For this who may want to know, a modded TDI should be basically a poor man's modded TDI Pro, since on most units modded, a filter change was done to match the filters of the Pro and here in the US, the filter difference is the big issue.

Water in coil. (4 replies)

Greetings fellow Tdi users.
So my last thread was regarding my detector being very unstable on the beaches here in San Diego. Went to La Jolla yesterday, detector would not hit on anything in all metal mode, and in ground balance very erratic. Today I was able to find my shooter coil and tried that, works flawlessly. It appears some water got into the stock coil, I noticed some sloshing sounds, and a little water dripping when I pushed the coils together. Anyone have that issue and is there a way to resolve problem, or does having water get in the coil destroy it. Any replies much appreciated.

Coiltek making Tdi coils, new windings for extra performance. (1 reply)

The Australian coil manufacturer Coiltek is making a series of new Tdi coils. A new coil winding technique claiming enhanced transmit and receive performance. Availability will be some time in December.. 2016. Not talking about Minelab type coils that will fit, but coils made specially for the Tdi series machines.. 4 sizes of coils being tested in USA, hoping a bit of Australian engineering can enhance the White's Tdi series machines. Claims for extra zip on targets and small percentages in depth etc.. looks very interesting.
We'll just have to wait and see.

All the best from down under.

TDI Work-out (2 replies)

Took my TDI to Daytona Beach Shores yesterday and spent about 4+ hours digging deep holes in damp hard-packed sand and filling them back in. This detector is a heck of a work-out. I would estimate more than half the targets I dug required holes of 12" to retrieve the targets. I was digging most everything. Only targets I skipped were the ones that were likely tent stakes or umbrella ribs. Deepest target was a nickle that was just barely a threshold variance- required a measured 15" hole in damp sand to retrieve. No rings. Couldn't get out to the prime low-tide area because surf was rough, temps were cool and I wussed out and wore jeans to stay warm so getting wet was high on my list of things not to do. Had a good time and improved my skill locating and pinpointing. Just a matter of time before I find some good stuff. Great detector! That whole area is very heavily hunted so depth was my primary concern. To that end I hunted with a delay of 10, gain 12, ground balance off. Man was I tired driving home! So, instead of getting a gym membership for the New Year, get yourself a TDI!

TDI and TDI PRO (3 replies)

I started this on another forum but didn't like the derogatory remarks made over there by few people partial to a certain foreign made brand (that likes to sue) about other detectors so I will no longer post on that forum.

Anyway, what I had to say over there is simply you can easily make a poor mans TDI Pro out of a basic TDI by simply changing two capacitors. This was done on most of the units modded by my friend when noise reduction mods were being done. So, if you had the mods done and had the Pro mod added, then you have this mod already.

The two caps are C59 and C60. Both are presently 0.22uf and need to be changed to 0.1uf. The two caps used as replacements do have to be matched to 1% for best operation.

This mod should only be done by a person with extensive experience and any attempt to do this mod should only be done realizing it is being done at your own risk. Any failure shall be the sole responsibility of the person doing the mods. Fortunately, the two caps are not surface mount units.

Since these two caps are the key reason the Pro works better than the TDI here in the US, simply changing them is all that is really needed to the unit a poor man's Pro.

What the change does is allow a faster sweep speed without losing depth. A regular TDI can easily lose depth if swept to fast, especially when hunting small gold. The cap change eliminates or at least greatly eliminates this problem.

Reg,

First off, glad to see you posting on here again. You have so much knowledge on the TDI and everyone here is so grateful for it.
A couple years ago I bought a TDI Pro and at the same time bought a Coiltek 1 inch probe and switchbox. The system worked great until the switchbox toggle switch broke. I know that Coiltek has discontinued the probe and the switchbox as that was the first thought I had about getting it fixed. So do you know anyone who could put a new toggle switch in the switchbox for me?

thanks,
Joe

SL (AND SPP) InMINI PRO???? (2 replies)

I am wondering if the heading of this post caught anyone's eye. Please let me know because it is possible. Unfortunately, I mentioned how it could be done on another forum frequented by what people tell me is a White's employee hoping he would be interested, but that was not to be. So it seems White's hasn't changed their tune.

So, rather than waste my time trying to talk to White's, I will offer a couple of ideas that should help the SL including making a SL mini Pro, but before I start, I need to remind everyone that any attempt to use any of my information should be done at their own risk and hold no one but themselves responsible for any outcome.

To begin with, let me say that the SL is almost identical in design to the TDI but does has some changes and features potentially added for future expansion, none of which have been implemented.
Because the design is similar to the TDI, it also suffers from filtering problems like the TDI. What this means is there is some circuitry that simply fights itself and causes problems that are amplified by sweep speed.

In simple terms, the design fights itself by reducing sensitivity if the sweep speed is too fast or too slow. So, there is a critical sweep action for the best results. A Tdi Pro mod greatly reduced this problem, thus the Pro works better and allows for a much greater sweep speed. The down side is changing the filtering does allow a little more noise through. Fortunately, it isn't much.

The simple solution to make a "poor man's SL Pro" is to simply change 2 capacitor just like I mentioned in changing caps in the TDI to make it a poor man's Pro model.. Like the TDI the caps need to be matched to 1% in value for best results.

So, the key now is to know the two cap part numbers which are C20 and C21 located near U6. Right now, these two caps are through the hole types so it is easier than changing surface mount types. Since the pc boards are multi layer, it just might be easier to cut the leads of the present caps maybe 1/8 to 1/4" above the board and simply bend the stubs back to the board. Then take new replacement caps with a value of 0.22uf and cut and bend the leads so they are L shaped with a similar length as those of the ones on the board and simply solder the corresponding leads together, thus replacing the .47uf with .22uf.

The result change will be a much wider range of sweep speeds with little to no depth loss. The only down side may be a little more noise because of less high pass cutoff. In simple terms, this means you can sweep much faster without much if any depth loss. So, on the upside, since most people sweep to fast anyway, the detector will appear to go deeper because you will be able to hear objects that would be missed because of the original filtering.

Next you need to look at when your detector was made. Any detector made before Jan 2015 most likely needs another mod to improve the GB and smooth out how the SL works. More about this will be posted later.

recent beach hunt (2 replies)

Took the SL for a spin today. Was using the 8x14"... really like this coil. Got it on sale last year and it's been my go to coil ever since. Light, gives a lot of info in the target response.
Took an hour to find the right spot. Then hammered the snot out of it. After a few hours switched the battery and unknowingly hit the delay all the way down to 10. The spot I was hitting had about 6" of soupy sand sitting on top of rocks, some a little bigger than a fist. Spent 2 hours digging up little iron bearing balls 3ft under the rocks before realizing my delay was off.
The bracelet came at a cost.... I have been trying to convince 1 of my competitors that the beach has nothing of value for 2 years now... he saw the bracelet flip out of the hole.

Recently purchased a smaller coil from a site member to use in the trashy areas where I hunt. I was originally wanting a true mono coil because of the extreme ground issues at some sites. The seller stated the coil was a 7.5" OZ mono, but when it arrived I noticed no markings on the coil and suspected something amiss. Took it to my test garden of 8+ years and each of the deeper targets could be easily identified. A bit of a relief, at least I got a usable coil. Made a few contacts with Carl, who used to work for Whites and he instructed me on how to test the two coils to determine its true make up. Well it turned out to be the Whites dual field coil. I said this all to say the Whites 7.5 dual field is no slouch like some have stated on other forums.

3 x 18650 battery holder for Whites (16 replies)

There is a post on the White's Spectra V3 forum about a 18650 battery holder for their power hungry machines. I figure the Tdi Sl also fits the bill, even more so.

I ordered two bright orange battery trays from the Ukraine using fleabay. Must admit it is an elegant and cheap solution. The one and only issue I have had with my machine is the question of the best battery option. The standard alkaline pack or factory options are okay. R@B aw2200 is good whilst finally this last attempt satisfies.

Full credit to the guys on the Spectra V3 forum for finding a solution to my problem.

I already had the batteries and charger so this holder was a cheap option. Cheap at $22 US plus $5 postage. So I got two, I've got a few White's machines..
The 18650 cells claim 3500 but are tested showing a realistic 3200. They are protected cells and charge to a max of 4.15v each. Totals are just over 12.3 volts very close to the R@B battery packs.

The Ukrainian battery tray is created on a 3D printer. Quality is good, just have to wait and see in regards to durability. I'll play it safe and keep them out of the sun.. it can be brutal to plastics.

All the best from Down Under, compliments of the season..

TDI Mods question (2 replies)

I will be getting a Whites TDI soon and want to have the mods done to smooth out the threshold. I had a TDI before and sent it in but it was sent back saying it could not be modded. I believe it was because it is a "Through hole model"

Unless it was the other way around. I cant remember!!

So my question is, What TDI can get the mods. I dont mean TDI Pro or SL, just the original TDI. Is it the through hole that can get the mods or not that one? And also how do I tell what model it is?

Thanks!!
