Starting to figure it out (2 replies)

I went relic hunting today at a spot that I've pounded with a couple of very good vlf machines. I have been messing around with my TDI lately & I'm starting to really like it. Seeing that we've beat on this place I didn't dig any shallow targets. Im starting to learn the machine finally. Now I only hunted in high conductivity so I know I left buttons & brass there. I'll hunt it in low next time & pull some deep buttons out. Thanks for looking HH Tim

Does anyone know what these things are actually called? They are coil connector protectors that go over the coil connector when not in use. Keeps out moisture, dirt, etc. $30 with shipping for 4 pieces of plastic is a bit rich for me

TDI Pro and SL videos (6 replies)

I have seen some videos on the Pro at the beach but not the SL. Will the SL give the same depth performance as the Pro or close to it? I mostly hunt saltwater beaches with the Excal but from what I see on the Pro videos I don't think the Excal will go that deep. I have found lots of silver coins and gold rings at the beach with the Excal at good depths but like what the Pro has been doing. Will the SL be better than the Excal or just go with the Pro? thanks....

Decided to get one before dealers run out as I have heard Whites will no longer make them, anyway, I will use this machine strictly for the wet salt sand. Have been reading everything I can find on this machine but what settings would be ok to use on the wet salt sand so I can bury low conductors and start playing with the knobs till I find the best for the beach I hunt? Thanks and HH

Questions on TDI Gain and nail signals (1 reply)

I picked up a gently used TDI, and I'm working my way thru the learning curve with this machine. Really enjoying the machine, but despite the claim it loves buttons, I have yet to find the 'button switch' on this rig yet! But I've only had 2 hunts with this machine, so I'm early in the learning curve.

Recently at a hunt in the Culpeper area I had 2 things come into question. First, the setup guides and settings I see posted for relic hunting this hot ground all have the gain set at 6. However, almost everyone I talked to at the hunt who were using the TDI (I sought out the guys I believe really know their machines) all said to run the gain as high as you could keep the threshold stable. So, I wound up hunting with the gain set around 10. I had the threshold up so it was about a smooth as you could want, had the volume adjusted in the headphones, so I had a nice smooth hum. So the question(s), was I hurting myself by running a higher gain than the book recommended 6? If so, why does the gain go up to 12?

Last question, for those who've hunted that hot ground. I managed to dig a ton of nails, big surprise there, and noticed 100% of the time the signal always had a little blip on the end. For example, a larger nail would give a low 'woo' passing over it one direction, but when I swung the coil back over it I'd get the low 'woo' and as the back edge of the coil left the target I'd get a quick blip of a high tone. Likewise, if it was a small nail, I'd start out with a high tone, and would get the blip of a low tone in one direction. Only got these blips in one direction, it was always the same swing direction for that target. Iron objects other than nails, bullets, brass objects, all gave 'pure' tones, with no blips. So, have other hunters in this area noticed this, and has it held true you've dug these ever present nails, or have you found some actual relics exhibiting these tones?

Jimmy Sierra T-Foot Coil For TDI Machines (1 reply)

Wondering if anyone has experience using the T-Foot coil for the TDI / TDI Pro / TDI SL machines. It was produced by Jimmy Sierra for Whites, but has been off the market for years now. Looking for input if it was a useful coil on the TDI platform - it's similar in appearance to the Bigfoot coil for XLT / DFX, but I can't seem to find any literature or field reports on it. Jimmy Sierra reported yesterday that the T-Foot coil works on the new TDI SL as well as the TDI & TDI Pro. Thanks in advance!

Wouldn't suggest trying this. Really annoying and troublesome. The yellow plano is a real tight fit.
Will be installing wireless headphones once the 90 degree adapter arrives from overseas. The coil cable is sitting at a weird angle.. might cause some problems in the future. The back of the box lifts up easily enough to charge the battery after every use. Not sure I will be using this setup in the blazing summer sun though.... Sort of like a car with all the windows rolled up sitting in the sun. This will be a night time, water, winter/spring/fall setup.
The biggest hidden problem is the fact that every cable for every TDI coil is about 2ft long. 1 out of my 6 coils has a cable long enough to be used in a box.
The controls are 100% FUNCTIONAL without opening the box. Unfortunately, I haven't come up with a workable solution to having to remove the battery from the control box to charge it. Otherwise the box wouldn't never have to be opened and I could have pig tailed the coil cable.
If there is any interest in this thread I will post some photos of the completed box and a simple solution I did to make all the controls accessible from outside of the box without opening it. This will work on any Whites machine with the controls setup like the TDI SL.

How slow do you move the coil on the TDI SL? (1 reply)

Just picked up a TDI SL and like a kid in the candy store, I went outside this evening for a short bit to try it out. Settings as Reg suggests (for coins): 10us, High conductivity, GB 4, Max Gain and a light threshold. I ran the little 7.5" White's dual field coil and I am amazed at its depth. (7-8") Maybe more although I didn't find anything past 8". I got fooled on two metal pepsi bottle tops. Sounded real good but thinking back on the situation they were real strong smooth tones in one direction and weak on the other. I will say I am impressed (and have a boatload to learn in sounds) and shocked as I have a tiny little yard where I live. I have run a dozen VLF detectors through my yard too. I found one nice smooth signal and it was a couple of inches to the left of a plug I made with a very famous vlf detector and in that plug I found a pulltab. Anyhow, tonight I pull a wheat cent a couple of inches from that pulltab. I am still scratching my head on this one as I have mowed through this little area a million times with all my VLF machines. So only a wheat cent to everyone else, to me, my yard just came back to life. I can't imagine how deep the 12" coil will go. Seems like it is going to be a fun little machine.

My question: How slow do you scan the coil on the TDI SL? I believe I need to slow down.

Since I am here writing this, are there such things as "one way signals" on coins with the TDI SL or will I always receive a good back and forth woo-woo on a coin? I received some signals that were smooth (and louder) going in one direction and soft on the return swing (just like the metal bottle tops I found). Thanks - Jim

Settings, 10us, GB - just a hair over 5, Gain - Max, slight threshold.

Starting to get the hang of the TDI SL. I feel the little 7.5 Whites Dual Field coil has super depth for its size. Today, I went to a well travelled wooded lot / field. I started out in the field and heard a smooth woo-woo. I knew this signal was deep but certainly not at the fringe. A solid 7" clad dime. I even throttled back the GAIN to 1/2 and could still pick up the signal very nicely.

I then headed over to a wooded section of the lot and scanning with my coil over the mounds of leaves on the ground (I was thinking maybe 4" but probably closer to a good half a foot off the ground) I pick up a nice smooth tone. Pushing away the leaves and cutting a plug, out pops a silver rosey! My first silver coin with the TDI SL. A little ways up I receive an overload signal. Raising the coil several inches off the ground, the tone smoothed right out. That signal turned out to be the crusty 1943 wheatie in the picture.

IRON signals: Understanding the clicks, pops, cracklin' of iron is starting to sink in to the grey matter. Also raising the coil and hearing it just fizzle out confirms my suspicions. Just think I am a individual that has always loved his "metered machines" lol Running PI and no visual ID is a challenge! Although I did get fooled again a few times by thin rusty iron wire. It sounds just like a nice smooth audio on a coin. I guess that comes with the territory.

I never dreamed in all my metal detecting years I would be running a PI on turf. Never saw that one coming. To be continued.

Anyone know the exact name of these spring clips? Can't find these things anywhere yet every metal detector has about 10 of them on it.
Trying to find a small box of 20 or so of them.
Thanks

SL straight shaft with extras (3 replies)

Nobody has done this as far as I know.
SL straight shaft that fits into a suitcase. :wiggle:
Once again the only drawback is the length of the coil cable. The bottom shaft can only be extended so far before it puts strain on the connectors.
The last straight shaft my elbow would occasionally nudge the threshold knob slightly.. just enough to annoy the sh*t out of me. This time I put it on a bit of an angle so it won't hit as often.

TDI or TDI Pro for salt water hunting? (3 replies)

Does anyone here hunt with their TDI in salt water and if so how is it working out for you? I'm tempted to buy a TDI or TDI Pro and water hunt with it chest mounted in waist deep salt water, I've read it'll hit a lot deeper than a Dual Field which I already own. Any comments or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

I just bought a tdi pro and have never used one before. I hunt for cw relics in fairly good soil..what settings would anyone suggest? Ive used the f75 ltd for years but the new upgrade killed depth in all metal. If anyone could suggest settings for a beginner in good soil and i will start in a low trash area. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Do i need to be concerned about TDI Pro battery packs ?? (no replies)

Just recently i bought a brand new TDI Pro that was possibly the last one that was available here in the UK before they dropped them from the product line up,of course the 'SL' version is still available but that will be around for a long time yet.

When i bought the detector, not only did i get 1 14.4v battery pack but i also bought another brand new on as a spare for say a complete weekends detecting if i am away, but i had a possible horrible thought about batteries in the future, what i mean by this the detectors is of course still covered by the warranty is anything should go wrong and they would also keep spares for these machines for many many more years, but they have also dropped the new 14.4 v batteries from the main Whites website. So this has me thinking how long will these 2 new batteries last in terms of longevity ?? Ni-cads of course diminished with age but not sure about these TDI Pro batteries,i spoke too the Scottish support helpline and they are saying that since this model has been out since 2009 they have never had to replace a bad battery yet.

So are folks still using the original battery from the early models and are they still working as they should or need i not have any worries, once i have done all my homework on a detector and then commit to buying one i also tend to keep them for many years possibly 10 years or more, any input regarding folks long term use of these batteries and how long i expect them to last,it could well have been a good move buying a spare backup, but not like the 'sl' version one can still use the spare pack with normal batteries in albeit this would be expensive to run it like that but at least one can still use that option ongoing.

Any views on this one would be most welcome, especially as i spoke with the UK helpline this morning they cannot see any problems long terms, but i thought i would ask this question from long term users of the Pro version.

Thanks

Can the TDI Pro be ground balanced on wet salt sand? Tried today just to see what would happen, wouldn't do it, am I doing something wrong? I ran TDI with GEB off n just as long as I kept coil level no problem. Clicked on GEB n it ran better n still gave me great depth, was digging Lincoln's 12+" with good tones. Thanks

Finally had a chance to take this down to the beach. I wasn't expecting much from the coil, but was thoroughly impressed. Target identification was easy. Large variety of targets in my area so for the most part anything with a constant/even signal gets the shovel. Very light coil and pinpointing was easy. I might even prefer the 8x14 over the stock 12". I haven't hit any necklaces with it but I was hitting targets deep enough and small enough to fall into that category.... Overall 8.5/10 for the coil

TDI pro depth (1 reply)

Hey guys, wondering what kind of depth you guys get on lets say a minie ball and brass buttons? In my test garden i'm not getting the depth i expected but i am new to the machine and have a long way to go. It gives no response to a minie ball buried at 12 inches and no response to a brass eagle coat button at 9 inches. It does give a"slight" response on a minie ball at 10 inches and an eagle button at 8 inches. I know 12 and 9 inches is pretty deep but im hoping for more depth because i bought it to hunt cw camps hunted hard with vfl machines but never with a pi machine. I have the stock coil and it ground balances between 7 and 8,gain at max. Threshold nice and steady.
