Just a few pics of some of the components in our Pro kit. Carbon fiber straight shaft, telescopic short shaft for small crevice coils, 2 piece back pack shaft, carbon fiber lower rods, chest mounts, hip mounts, special brackets to mount control box vertically under shaft, etc. These accessories have been designed with professional prospector input so ergonomics played a major role in the parts development. Some pics show a custom digital camo pattern Duracoat finish as per customer request..

Looking for a slightly larger coil for a TDI any suggestions ?? (4 replies)
Would like some help/advice/suggestions on a larger than stock coil for a TDI machine, more specific the 'sl' version, the machine i have has the 12'' stock coil and also the 7.5DF coil which in theory would cover most needs, but i have 3 sites that are roman, saxon and celtic which from previous detecting sessions have shown potential hoard or deep artifacts in the area.
So hence the need for a slightly larger coil,i am thinking in the size range of 14''-16'' dia as this i feel will give me not only more depth but also still keep the sensitivity towards small coins,as these are scattered pot hoard locations that are i am guessing in the 12'' to 20'' depth range, the main aftermarket coils for the TDI range are mainly the RazorBack/Miner John ones which have been designed specifically for the TDI machines.
So has anyone any good reviews of coils within my criteria or infact any other suggestions which would be a better option, perhaps even another aftermarket brand as well that would do the job.
The problem i could possibly see is the fact that most of these coils are US or Aussie made and i am based in the UK so do have to take carriage and other import costs into account, would be more than willing for a mint condition 2nd user one,but all suggestion would be welcome.
Many thanks

TDI for all around detecting ???? (no replies)
Is the TDI SL a good all around detector for about anything that lies below the surface? Here in northern Ca. the ground in fairly hard and in lots of areas rocky areas as well as forested areas. We have a lot of in the summer dry creek and stream beds etc. Lots of areas for gold prospecting in these areas soon as all the snow melts. Its a fairly short drive to western Nevada also. I was looking at the MXT detector but do not mind stepping up to the TDI SL detector if it will be more effective here. I like to do a good variety of detecting. Will not do any beach detecting at all. If I was to step up to this detector what coils are recommended for gold in stream beds and best for all around use? We do have mineralized soil in areas. Will this detector work well for coin and general detecting also? Would appreciate feedback on this detector. Thanks and Happy Holidays to all.

TDI SL KNOBS (4 replies)
Anyone know how to take off the knobs for the TDI SL? I'm trying to tighten them up so they don't rotate so easily. I have it mounted on a straight shaft behind the elbow and everytime I dig my elbow nudges the threshold knob.
I don't want to have to open the control box.
Can the knobs be pulled off or if twisted hard enough? I tried loosing the bolt from underneath but the space is so tight I can hardly fit in a wrench never mind adding in a rubber washer without taking off the knob for more space to work with.

Ten coil test, mini Jimmy vs the rest. (3 replies)
Combining my own coils and those of family and friends I've put together a collection. Just waiting for a Miner John 9x5 folded mono to arrive in the mail and I'm going to do a comparison. Plan is to head for hot Australian ground in the goldfields nearby and bury some small 0.5 gram coins at 2, 4, 6, 8, and ten inches. I've got a collection of the coins that I use as small gifts for friends and relatives. Not the most complex test, not real world, but it might offer some insight. These coins are small.
Only got the coils for a few weeks so it is an opportunity to satisfy my curiosity. Hope to test with my Tdi Sl in both low and all conductive modes. Also going to compare standard alkaline battery pack with lithium disposables and Nizn batteries just to see how voltage can influence depth. Mostly a beach hunter who dabbles with prospecting so I'm interested in finding out which coil is best for the job. Coils will be low and sweep speed slow.
So far I have a Whites 12" duelfield, Miner John 11 x 7 mono, Detech 11 x 6 mono, Razorback Longreach 10x6 mono, Jimmy coil duelfield 9x5, Nugget Finder 8 x 6 Sadie mono, Whites 150 mono, and finally a very rare mini Jimmy 6 x 4 mono. Still waiting for a Miner John 9 x 5 folded mono. When that folded mono arrives I'll be off in short order.
All the best.

Anyone using a Minelab Commander Mono coil on a TDI Pro ??? (7 replies)
Have the option to buy a brand new genuine 15x12 Minelab Commander Mono coil for my TDI Pro,all ready have a Coiltek 14x9 coil for the TDI but was wonder what advantages and of course any dis-advantages as well that this coil has with the TDI,its mainly the extra depth that i am after over the stock 12'' DF coil, this combination will only be used on a few of my top roman sites and hence the extra depth that i require.
So if anyone is or has used one of these Commander coils it would be a tremendous help if you can share your experience please.

Tdi vs the other big 2/PI ? (6 replies)
Would like your opinion on the tdi pro vs gpx 4800 and Garrett's atx. I had a tdi modded that was sweet I just got the fever to get a deus and traded it. But I am wanting another PI, I live in West Tn. Usually medium soil conditions and like to relic and coin hunt. I've got a.few fields that I've hit hard that might have some deepies left. Any suggestions. I was leaning minelab until I heard the battery was not part of the machine and of course the cost plus I.had an explorer that crapped out and they would not fix it. I think I like the tdi pro just want your thoughts

Minelab stems on Tdi fit well. For Mega. (2 replies)
In answer to your question Mega, the use of GPX coils on the Tdi series is simplified by using Minelab or equivalent third party lower stems.
They fit well since they are almost identical in diameter, perfect fit really. You can very simply change the spring clip arrangement if using larger coils. You can just use the locking cam for smaller coils. The Minelab stems are perhaps a bit thicker so the spring clips are a bit tighter in fit.
In the images you can see the Minelab stem is almost the same length as the White's tall man stem, just a bit shorter. Perfect for Tdi Sl users.
I've used them extensively and there is no flex or wobble since they are tight.
I also use coil plug protective boots on all my Tdi coils. Just search fleabay for Silicone Blanking Caps 12mm 15/32", cheaper than some name brands..
Sometimes solutions can be simple and cheap.
Tried using White's stems with washers, not really satisfactory for anything but the smallest coil and even then not perfect.
Hope this helps Mega.

Ten coil test, results and opinion. (3 replies)
All coils tested on the same day and location. The detector used was a White's Tdi Sl, using alkaline batteries changed regularly. Nokia MD11 external speaker used, it amplifies the signal and is very loud. Small targets at shallow depth were buried. These were a 1 gram ingot, .17 gram specimen, a .35 gram specimen. Given the shallow detection depth I had no choice. A .5 gram gold coin, 1/2 Sovereign, 3 pence coin, 1.5 oz lead slug and White's belt buckle were buried sideways into a trench. Thus leaving the surface soil intact.
Location was Nuggetty Gully West of Dunolly, the locale for the Belgian Rush and famous for large nuggets at shallow depth. The ground was mineralized to a degree that it greatly hindered the operation of the White's MXT, even with 6x4 dd shooter coil attached. The Tdi Sl also suffered, as is evident looking at the results. This is NOT a test of the performance of the detector, just a reflection of the results that can be expected with a variety of coils under adverse ground conditions. This area was heavily rich in hot rocks, quartz and ironstone, ie gold country.
Depth is measured in mm, 25mm = 1 inch
Basic air depth test and in ground balanced tests in all and low. No real depth variation between ALL and LOW conductivity as far as I could see but some targets of larger size were lost in Low.
Air = Gain max, Ground Balance Off, Pulse Delay 10, Frequency 12 o'clock, Conductivity All, Threshold hum.
Low = Gain max, Ground Balanced at between 7-8, Pulse Delay 10, Frequency 12 o'clock, Conductivity LOW, Threshold hum.
All = Gain max, Ground Balanced at between 7-8, Pulse Delay 10, Frequency 12 o'clock, Conductivity ALL, Threshold hum.
Some coils air tested really well, would also probably perform really well in milder ground, but this rich red soil full of minerals was a real equalizer. The White's duelfield was the only coil that refused to ground balance properly on the site, but wasn't unusable and gave an honest performance. On white beach sand it is deadly and deep so that is were I'll continue to use it.
All Miner John coils were well made and light. That weight can be a major point to consider, balanced with performance.
I'll revisit this topic with a chart of results, photo or pdf format, failed attempt to type it up here.

Wear and tear, 4 years on the beach. For stephenscool (1 reply)
stephenscool, in answer to your question, this is what 4 years of beach service does to a White's coil.
Pretty much nothing, no fading, no scratches, looks factory new. Clean with fresh water, a wet towel wipe down.
Use car polish to put a protective coat on and prevent sun damage. We all pay top dollar for our equipment, so a
bit of tender loving care goes a long way.

12.5 volt alkaline battery pack vs 14.5 volt lithuim batteries. (no replies)
Almost forgot to keep my promise and do a very quick and simple test. Fresh 12.5 volt alkaline battery pack used in Tdi Sl gave 30 cm depth on Australian penny, GB off gain max, pulse set at 10, running in all conductivity. Same settings but using Lithium disposable batteries, pack supplying 14.5 volts, 33 cm depth. Backyard test garden, no ground balancing required. Headphones used.
Coil was Razorback Longreach 10 x 6 mono.
Alkaline 12.5v =30cm 12 inches
Lithium 14.5v =33cm 13+ inches
Not dramatic but that is 10%.

Hey White's TDI Pro Users! (1 reply)
i posted this in another spot, and someone pointed me to this section, so here it is...LOL
hey beepers....
i just wanted to let all you whites TDI Pro users know that in the near future, there will be an ALTERNATIVE to those hugely overpriced whites TDI Pro and aftermarket battery packs.
ive been running detectors for about 32 years now. ive owned and ran just about everything you can think of detector-wise, and own a total of 11 different detectors. recently i picked up a nice Whites TDI Pro in a trade. it came with the charger and one battery. i spend alot of time out detecting in nevada and arizona, and figured id put the TDI to work this summer, so i needed a extra battery. i went online and started checking them out and almost fell off my frickin chair. i couldnt believe that whites wanted $199 bucks for a battery pack!...i thought i was looking at minelab or something!...i started looking for aftermarket batteries, and found a couple but still, $169 was/is a really over the top price. on a whim, i pulled the shrink wrap off my battery pack, and discovered that theres really not much to them, CERTAINLY not $199 worth!!!!. i started talking to people, sourcing parts, ect and found that its actually CHEAP to build these things even with quality japanese cells ( whites uses cheap $4 a piece retail price samsung batteries in their packs, bulk their probably paying a quarter a pop for them)
ive been doing ALOT of research, talking to other long time detectorists, pickin some brains and spending A LOT of time on email and the phone. soon i will be posting the info, plans, material sources and how to with pictures to build your OWN 8 cell Li-Ion TDI Pro battery packs for UNDER $50 A PACK with PREMIUM JAPANESE CELLS, protection PCB board ect included, and that will charge with your original equipment whites chargers (WHICH BY THE WAY im also looking at another automatic charger that does exactly the same thing as the whites charger, a little better specs, ect for a whopping $28.00..go figure), and according to my calculations, will last days compared to the whites batteries.. no more high dollar aftermarket batteries for the TDI Pro!
for those of you who dont want to have to order all the parts ( which can be ordered seperately by the way there no bulk requirement) , i may also put together a complete "you build" kit with everything you need and instructions, or for those who just cant get the hang of doing it themselves , i may even be persuaded to build them for you for a small fee if you buy the pre-prepared kit from me.
i may even offer pre-built packs VERY reasonable
ive already ordered parts, ect so when they come in, i will let everyone know.
im also working on a very inexpensive minelab GP/GPX battery pack also.

UPDATE:...so far i have several packs built and have been testing them and they are working wonderfully with no issues. if i decide to sell these myself they will work out to about $85 bucks a piece shipped with a 6 month warranty and they will charge with your stock whites chargers , both house and auto. only issue im having is im not particularly fond of the heat shrink ive gotten, i dont like the way it looks. im looking for a different supplier for the heat shrink so i will keep everyone informed.....

Does anyone use the 7.5'' DF Coil on the TDI Pro ??? (3 replies)
I have the TDI Pro and as well as the stock coil 12'' DF,i have 3 larger coils for deep work which will be used a reasonably amount but i also have a new 7.5'' DF coil which came with the new TDI but as i live in the UK we dont have any gold fields so no nugget hunting,we of course do have history but was thinking apart from using the large coils when would most folks use the tiny 7.5'' coil ??
Of course it would be great for ting gold nuggets but i was thinking could it be used for say coin shooting on bad for us mineralized soil which is not in the same league as in Australia or Culpepper or what ever the place is called,so any suggestions or should i sell it and recoup some of my expense on the TDI Pro or best leave it and try using it for small finds or coin shooting.
I just cannot think of a use for tis coil and as no other folks seem to talk about it i am thinking do you sell them or use them for non nugget hunting, must admit ia have not even tried using it as yet or got a clue how good or deep it is.
