TDI for civil war relic hunting (2 replies)

So I have the stock coil on my TDI but want to get another coil, can anyone tell me what is the best choice for this? I live in middle Tennessee and hunt mainly open fields and areas with minimal brush. I have owned this machine for almost a year now and want to see if there is anything I have been missing. I have researched Razorback and Miner John coils as well as Jimmy Sierra coils but experience is the best choice when someone has already used other coils and can give positive or negative feedback on them, I really appreciate your help.

Thanks, Bill

Use around trash and multiple targets (no replies)

Ok quick question and hope to get a couple of replies. How does the tdi sl or pro do in trashy areas. I had one borrowed but took it back before trying it in trash, it did great in my yard and a school. I found lots of coins to trash. I went to a site today, an old community center that was pretty trashy- iron-nails some aluminum really had to concentrate but did pull a 1941 Washington. With multiple targets and trash does the Sl or pro hang in there and separate ok. I know it's only got 2 tones s that should help. I'm really thinking seriously of getting one and should have tried it in trashy spots. Thanks
Brian

Perfect setting for this site (3 replies)

After several hours hunting with the TDI SL I finally found the perfect settings for this particular site. This place is littered with the waste bi-product of burnt coal over many years. Much of the waste is small in size, ranging from BB to marble size and the smaller pieces easily attract to a magnet. In addition to that, the area is littered with nails ranging from 1 to 4" in length and some up to 4" deep. These nails, especially the larger ones give a good audio, especially with a ground balance of 8-9. After a suggestion from Reg, I began adjusting the GB to 4-5 and if the signal became inconsistent then the target was most like a nail. After a lengthy amount of hunting I decided to run the machine at gain max, pulse 10 and GB of exactly 5. Surprisingly the false signals all but stopped and I started finding old copper pennies some being wheat pennies in an area where I had gridded off and cleaned out of all good targets. Amazingly, I still can't believe I had missed that many targets with my other machines.
Now my next plan is to locate, what I believe to be good non-ferrous targets with the SL and mark each location. Then use my regular VLF machine and see if I can detect each target and note the audio responses given. Many things to consider in this journey. Very excited to say the least.

Running thr TDI as a full blown PI with no GB (6 replies)

I only have 11 hours on my TDI so far so all this is new to me. I got a tip from a lad on another forum, when running the TDI with no GB on, I should leave the conductivity switch in the low position as it will run with less noise. Yesterday I tried it out and guess what there was a huge difference between the low and all positions. After reading the manual again, it said that the conductivity switch has no effect on the detectors operation when the GB is off, all the manual says is that the conductivity switch has to be in the all or low position. Running the TDI with GB off and the conductivity in low, the detector ran a lot quitter with only higher pitched tones. With the conductivity switch in the all position, signal tones have a lot more depth to them with all I can describe as two tones, all signals sound off with a high tone but the with the ramp up and down there are hints of a low tone. Is this normal with a TDI? This leads me to a second question, should I be hunting in the quitter low position or in the high position with possibly more information on target ID? I will stress again this is with the TDI in full blown PI mode with GB OFF.

Coil help before purchase PLEASE (3 replies)

Need help. I am fixing to buy a tdi sl. New or used depends on coil help. So Reg or any others who relic and coin hunt I've priced a new one, is there something I should choose other than the 12 and 7 DF's. I won't be prospecting so are there better choices If buying new? I think he will let me pick other whites coils.
Ive found a used one quiet a bit cheaper that has the 12 DF and Arkansas coil 8x 11. If this second set up saved quiet a bit of money is it a better choice. I've heard several say there are better coils than the stock.

Anti interference coils? (6 replies)

Has anyone any experience of using anti interference coils on a TDI. My reason for asking is if they can improve the GPX's capabilities on wet sands by reducing the ground effects caused by wet salt sands, would using them on a TDI also reduce the ground effect?

TDI with Reg's Mod - BLISS! (5 replies)

Last week I purchased a secondhand TDI from a guy who had sent it in to have Reg Sniff's noise reduction mod done - along with replacement of the op-amp.

I had a TDI previously and the difference between that one and this one is like night and day. My old one had a warbly threshold that drove me nuts and made it very difficult to use the sensitivity higher than about 2/3 of full. My house is EMI hell, the neighborhood has underground utility service and the transformers sit on the ground. Even mildmannered VLF's like Whites Classics go nuts here at full sensitivity.

This TDI has a silky smooth threshold with just an occasional blip at full sensitivity (12). It also air tests 17" on a nickle with the standard 12" DP coil! That's 4" more than I ever got with my old TDI here at the house with the same coil.

I have been playing with the silver coin hunter trick with the high conductor mode selected and the GB offset to kill all ferrous. It really works - with the GB on 4, I hear no iron - and a quarter that I buried down 8" about 5 years ago gets a good signal with 2-3" air gap even using a 10" elliptical Coiltec mono.

I also find that if I set the GB at 11 I get about 2" more depth on the silver coins. This, of course, brings the iron back, but Imonly have to crank the GB back to 4 to test. Might be useful for parks or other places where coins could be deep and not too much iron trash to slow you down.

Now I need to find a dead Bigfoot coil and build a mono PI "Bigfoot".

Fun!

Well, went back to the same site where I posted, "perfect settings for this site" and hunted a small area not more that 60' from the prior hunt. Used the same settings "GB 5, pulse 10 and gain max" and off I went. After a short while I noticed a lot of clipped or inconsistent audio reports. Decided at that point to reduce gain to 7 and continued. Hunted a few more feet, still clipped audio, strange, so I stopped to analyze the area a little more closely. Sweep in one direction and get a some what good audio, but the return sweep was either silent or chatter. Suspecting something was the cause I stopped and increased the pulse delay up a tad, nothing changed. Continued to increase the pulse until I reached 17 and suddenly the audio came through as a loud, almost overload low tone. Thinking it might be a nail, I dug and out comes a copper penny at less than 4" deep. Now to say the least, I was excited and puzzled.
Decided to start over where I started hunting and experiment using a pulse rate of 17. A few moments later came the same type of loud low tone. Thinking there is no way I missed that one my first pass I changed the pulse to 10 and the signal all but disappeared. Increased the pulse to 20 this time and spent over 5 minutes rotating around this target checking from every possible angle to see what might be causing the anomaly, switched the conductivity switch to all and still a consistent low tone with nothing else mixed in. Now one must keep in mind I'm using the stock 12" and at times it is very difficult to exactly pinpoint where the target actually is. Changed the pulse to 10 and and the low tone practically disappeared. Now I was wishing I had brought my Deus to recheck some of these inconsistent signals, maybe next time. Well anyway I dug a nice plug and out comes a wheat penny at less than 5" deep. Excited to recover something from an area that quit producing years ago.
Continued hunting with settings of pulse 20, GB 5 and gain at 7, and found many more coins dated in the early 60's all within a 3' path some 60' long. Already planning what I'll do my next hunt.

What I learned from this hunt:
Don't assume you have the best settings for any site especially the sites where coal waste has been discarded for many years.
I'm suspecting the partial or complete cause of the anomalies are the small BB size waste particles from the coal fired furnaces that will easily attract to a magnet . In fact dropping a strong magnet into the same hole where a coin was revealed exactly that.
I'm relativity sure I need a mono coil, but undecided as to what I'll get.

More reports to come.

Hi From Tom B in AZ (2 replies)

I would like to introduce myself , I am Tom B in Surprise AZ, I go by Colt on the Finds forum, a nic-name I got many years ago. I have owned and used a lot of detectors, but got out of the hobby a couple of years ago to peruse other interest. I now have 6 detectors, that I bought from a friend who had to get out of the hobby due to health issues. One of the detectors is a new TDI SL with a couple of coils, so I thought I would stop by a pick up some tips

I am clad to see Reg Sniff on this forum, he is a super nice guy. About 8 years ago, he made an adapter for me so I could use Minelab coils on my Goldquest SSV2. kinda gave me an unfair advantage on finding nuggets here in the Bradshaw Mountains. Reg sorry I did not share my gold nugget finds with you, but gold fever does strange things to a mans mind.

Well I have a lot of reading to do on the TDI forum to get up to speed, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone make a cover for the original tdi big box where you can still adjust knobs with cover on. The only one Ive seen looks completely enclosed. The only reason I want one is for when I go to the beach. Not gonna use it unless it's raining or at the beach

I just got a TDI and I was charging the batteries. The light on the charger just flashes red and does this with both batteries. I charged them for about 6 hours a piece and I still have no power to the TDI. When I got the TDI the batteries were charged so I used up the juice first. I am thinking my charger is bad but I am not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Went to one of favorite places to hunt. Have found some silver and some buttons as well as some relics. It's a field where an old house used to be and a large 1920 house sits in front And an old school/ community center to the side. Lots of people over the years. Pat least 10 plus acres. This prob makes the 8th time And second w the TDI. My 2 tdi hunts are 0 for 60 keepers to trash. Lots of nails and big iron. What's the best way to use. Tdi in a place like this. I mean there.is a of of iron and nails but not that bad. Iknow there are relics and coins still there. It's only my second hunt w the tdi but I have used a tdi sl before. I started out 2 tone and 8 gb but eventually scaled back to hi and 4 gb. Any tips or tricks You guys know. All that Iron Sounded good. Gotta be a sound I have not picked up on yet. When I park hunted with the sl I kicked butt maybe I need to try that till I get used to it. I am going to grab some soil from this place and bring it home and do some test to see if I can figure this out.
